The Captain Cook Highway from Cairns to Port Douglas is one of Australia's finest coast roads — 65km of sweeping curves above beaches with the Great Barrier Reef visible offshore. North of Mossman, the road crosses the Daintree River by cable ferry into the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth (180 million years) and continues to Cape Tribulation, where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet at the same beach. Return to Cairns is 100km of the same road, which feels entirely different heading south.
