Overview

Daintree & Cape Tribulation — Where the Reef Meets the Rainforest.

The Captain Cook Highway from Cairns to Port Douglas is one of Australia's finest coast roads — 65km of sweeping curves above beaches with the Great Barrier Reef visible offshore. North of Mossman, the road crosses the Daintree River by cable ferry into the oldest tropical rainforest on Earth (180 million years) and continues to Cape Tribulation, where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet at the same beach. Return to Cairns is 100km of the same road, which feels entirely different heading south.

ROUTE
7 stops
Start
CairnsStart · Start in Cairns. Fuel up — there are no petrol stations between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation. Head north on the Captain Cook Highway.
Photo
Rex LookoutPhoto Spot · The first great viewpoint on the Captain Cook Highway: the Coral Sea stretching to the horizon, reef visible below the surface, and the road carving along the cliff above Palm Cove beach. One of Queensland's most spectacular road sections.
Food
Port DouglasRestaurant · The upscale resort town on a headland above Four Mile Beach. Good coffee and breakfast on Macrossan Street. Flagstaff Hill lookout gives a 270-degree view of the Coral Sea.
Photo
Mossman GorgePhoto Spot · Short detour from Mossman town into the Wet Tropics National Park. The Mossman River runs crystal-clear over granite boulders through ancient rainforest — one of the finest freshwater swimming spots in Queensland. Shuttle bus from the park centre; bikes stay at the carpark.
Waypoint
Daintree River Ferry CrossingFerry · The only way across the Daintree River — a small cable-pulled vehicle ferry operating continuously through the day. No bridge (intentional — it limits development north of the river). Once across, the rainforest closes overhead and mobile coverage disappears.
Scenic
Alexandra Range LookoutScenic Point · The road climbs the Alexandra Range through cathedral rainforest. Views back over the Daintree delta and the Coral Sea — jungle meeting ocean. Cassowaries (large, flightless, dangerous if provoked) sometimes cross the road here.
End
Cape TribulationEnd · Where two UNESCO World Heritage areas meet at the same beach: the Great Barrier Reef offshore, the oldest rainforest on Earth at the waterline. Named by Captain Cook in 1770 when the Endeavour grounded on the reef. Beyond here the road becomes 4WD-only track. Return to Cairns via the same road, 100km — different light, equally beautiful heading south.
