Built between 1970–1974 at enormous human cost as a Cold War military road, DN7C crosses the Southern Carpathians at 2,042 m via a 887 m tunnel. The approach from the south is relentless switchbacks; the north descends past Bâlea Lake and into Transylvania. Jeremy Clarkson called it 'the best road in the world.'
