Switzerland packs more world-class motorcycle passes into a small area than almost anywhere on earth. The classic triangle of Furka, Grimsel, and Susten passes can be ridden in a single day, while the Gotthard, Klausen, and Oberalp passes add variety for multi-day tours. The road surfaces are immaculate and the alpine scenery is as dramatic as it gets.
The riding season runs from June through October for high passes, though lower-altitude routes through valleys and around lakes can be ridden from April. Pass openings depend on snowfall — check the TCS (Touring Club Schweiz) website for real-time status. Swiss roads are meticulously maintained but can be narrow on older pass roads.
Switzerland is expensive — budget for tolls (the annual motorway vignette costs CHF 40), parking, fuel, and mountain restaurant stops. The vignette is mandatory for motorways but most pass roads are toll-free. Riders from the EU can use their existing licence; others may need an International Driving Permit.
