Romania is home to Europe's most spectacular mountain road — the Transfagarasan, a 90-kilometre engineering marvel built by Ceausescu's military that crosses the Fagaras Mountains at 2,042 metres through tunnels and dramatic switchbacks. Jeremy Clarkson called it 'the best road in the world' on Top Gear, and for once the hype is justified. The Transalpina (DN67C) is equally dramatic with less traffic.
The Transfagarasan and Transalpina are open only from July through October due to heavy snowfall. The Transylvania region offers excellent lower-altitude touring year-round — medieval castles, fortified churches, and rolling Carpathian foothills connected by quiet roads. The northern Maramures region preserves a way of life that has barely changed in centuries.
Romanian roads vary widely in quality — main routes are good but rural roads can be rough and shared with horse carts and livestock. Fuel is affordable and stations are common on main routes. Romania offers exceptional value for touring — food, accommodation, and fuel are among the cheapest in the EU. Carry cash for remote areas.
