Motorcycle valve clearance is the tiny gap between the camshaft (or its rocker) and the top of each valve, and it is one of the most overlooked services on a bike. Get it wrong and the engine runs rough, starts hard, loses power, or — in the worst case — burns a valve and needs a top-end rebuild. This guide explains what valve clearance is, the symptoms of a check being overdue, how often different bikes actually need one, and what a valve adjustment costs, so you can plan for it instead of discovering it the expensive way.

What valve clearance actually is

Every four-stroke engine opens its valves with a camshaft and closes them with springs. There has to be a small gap in that mechanism when the valve is fully closed — otherwise thermal expansion could hold a valve open. That gap, measured with a feeler gauge while the engine is stone cold, is the valve clearance (also called valve lash).

The gap is not fixed for life. As the engine wears, the valve face and its seat pound into each other microscopically and the valve creeps deeper into the head. On most spring-valve engines this makes the clearance shrink over time — the valves get tighter, not looser. That is why a check matters even when the bike sounds perfectly healthy: a valve can quietly tighten its way toward trouble without making a sound.

Loose vs tight: why the direction matters

The two failure directions are not equally dangerous.

  • Too loose (excess clearance): you hear a light ticking or tapping from the top end, loudest at idle. The engine loses a little performance and efficiency, but it is generally the less harmful direction because the valve still closes fully.
  • Too tight (insufficient clearance): the valve no longer seats completely. It leaks compression — causing hard starting (cold or hot), a lumpy idle, and lost power — and, critically, it can no longer shed its heat into the cylinder head. A valve that cannot cool overheats and burns, which turns a routine adjustment into a costly head repair.

Because clearances tend to tighten with wear, the quiet, well-behaved bike is exactly the one that can drift into the dangerous direction unnoticed.

Symptoms your valve check is overdue

None of these are proof on their own — the only way to know is to measure — but together they say "check the valves":

  • Rough idle or occasional stalling with no other obvious cause.
  • Power that falls off at higher rpm.
  • Popping or backfiring on a trailing throttle.
  • Worse fuel economy than the bike used to return.

A healthy engine can be slightly "tappety" when cold, and top-end noise has other sources (cam chain tensioner, etc.), so treat symptoms as a prompt to measure — not a diagnosis.

Shim vs screw: the two adjustment systems

How much a valve service costs depends heavily on which system your engine uses.

  • Screw-and-locknut: you slacken a locknut and turn an adjuster screw to set the gap against a feeler gauge, then re-tighten. It is simple, cheap, and DIY-friendly — common on many singles, twins, and older engines.
  • Shim-over-bucket (or shim-under-bucket): a hardened shim of a precise thickness sits between the cam and the valve. Measuring is easy, but adjusting means physically swapping in a different-thickness shim — and on many designs that requires removing the camshafts to get at them. It is far more labour, which is why shim-equipped inline-fours and sportbikes cost more to service.

How often to check — it varies a lot

There is no universal number. Intervals run from a few engine hours on a high-strung dirt bike to well past 40,000 km on a modern street twin. The examples below come from manufacturer maintenance charts; always defer to your own owner's manual and your exact model year and market, because they differ.

Note the market split on the MT-07: the European owner's manual lists the valve check at 40,000 km (24,000 mi) while US-market documentation shows 42,000 km (26,600 mi). Hydraulic lifters: the "never adjust" exception

Some engines — most Harley-Davidson V-twins, plus various cruisers and tourers — use hydraulic lifters that take up their own clearance automatically using oil pressure. Harley has used them since the 1948 Panhead, and on the Milwaukee-Eight there is simply no scheduled valve adjustment. The trade-off is a little more valvetrain weight and a rev ceiling, which is why high-revving sportbikes avoid them.

Desmodromic (Ducati): a different animal

Ducati's desmodromic engines close each valve mechanically with a second set of cam lobes and rockers instead of springs. A "desmo service" therefore checks both the opening and closing clearances, which makes it more involved — and typically pricier — than a conventional check. What a valve adjustment costs

It helps to separate two jobs. The check measures every clearance; the adjustment only happens for the valves that are out of spec. Plenty of bikes reach their interval with everything still in tolerance, so you are often paying mostly for the labour to reach the valves and inspect them. The big cost drivers are the number of cylinders and valves, how buried the cam cover is (fairings, tank, airbox and coolant all add hours), and shim vs screw adjusters.

These are broad ranges — dealers charge more than independents, and quotes for the same bike vary widely. Should you do it yourself?

Checking clearances is within reach of a patient home mechanic with a feeler-gauge set, the service data for the gap spec, and a fresh valve-cover gasket. Always measure on a cold engine, and torque the cam cover to spec. Adjusting is where it gets harder: screw-type adjusters are straightforward, but shim swaps need the right shim thicknesses on hand and sometimes cam removal, and desmo systems are a job for someone who has done them before. When in doubt, pay a shop — a burnt valve costs far more than the labour you saved.
