Unlike a worn chain or a low tyre, tired brake fluid gives no warning on a normal ride. Motorcycle brake fluid should be changed every two years, regardless of mileage — this is the recommendation printed in Honda and Yamaha owner's manuals alike, and it exists for one reason: brake fluid absorbs water out of the air, and water ruins braking.

Why brake fluid goes bad (even if you barely ride)

Glycol-based brake fluid (DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1) is hygroscopic: it actively pulls moisture out of the atmosphere through seals, hoses and the reservoir vent. Ride harder or in tougher conditions and you should shorten that window:

The "DOT" grades are defined by the U.S. federal standard FMVSS No. 116 (49 CFR 571.116), which sets the minimum boiling points a fluid must meet to carry each rating. Two numbers matter:
- Dry boiling point — brand-new fluid straight from a sealed bottle (0% water).
- Wet boiling point — fluid that has absorbed moisture (the standard's wet test is run on humidified fluid at roughly 3.7% water content, simulating a couple of years of service).
The wet number is the honest one, because that's the state your fluid is actually in after a year or two on the bike.

Notice how much the wet number falls below the dry number: a fresh DOT 4 fluid clears 230 °C, but once it has absorbed its normal service moisture the boiling point can drop to the 155 °C floor. The DOT 5 trap
Do not confuse DOT 5 with DOT 5.1. DOT 5.1 is glycol-based and mixes safely with DOT 3/DOT 4. DOT 5 is silicone-based, is not hygroscopic, and is not compatible with glycol fluids — mixing them can wreck the system. Silicone DOT 5 also traps air more readily and is generally not used with ABS. Unless your manufacturer specifically calls for DOT 5 silicone (rare, mostly some classic/military applications), stick with the glycol grade your manual specifies.
Which grade should you use?
The safe answer is simple: use the exact DOT grade printed on your reservoir cap or in your owner's manual. You can generally step up to a higher glycol grade for more heat resistance (for example DOT 4 in place of DOT 3, or DOT 5.1 in place of DOT 4), because they're compatible glycol fluids — but never step down below what the manufacturer specifies, and never substitute silicone DOT 5 for a glycol fluid.
Warning signs your brake fluid is overdue
Fluid that needs changing usually shows one or more of these:
- Dark or murky colour. Fresh glycol fluid is clear to light amber (FMVSS 116 requires DOT 3/4/5.1 to be colourless-to-amber). Brown, cloudy or near-black fluid in the reservoir sight glass is contaminated and old.
- A spongy or "long" lever/pedal. If the lever feels soft or travels further before biting, that can be absorbed moisture or air in the system.
- Brake fade under repeated hard braking. Fluid boiling from heat (vapour lock) makes the brakes go soft as they get hot — a classic sign of moisture-laden fluid.
- It's simply been two years (or you don't know when it was last done). The calendar is the most reliable indicator, because the dangerous degradation happens invisibly.
Colour is a useful quick check on a pre-ride inspection, but it is not a substitute for the interval — fluid can be near its boiling-point limit while still looking acceptable.
DIY vs. shop: cost and what's involved
Changing brake fluid means bleeding the system: pushing fresh fluid through until all the old, wet fluid and any air is gone, front and rear. It's a genuinely doable home job, but it is safety-critical work — get it wrong (air left in the lines, wrong fluid, spilled fluid on paint) and the consequences are real.
