The Interoceanic Highway drops from the thin air of Cusco at 3,400m to the steaming Amazon lowlands of Puerto Maldonado. Over two days the fully paved road crosses a 4,700m pass, spills through dense cloud forest past the old gold town of Quince Mil, and crosses the Inambari river into the rainforest of Madre de Dios. One of the great altitude-to-jungle transitions in South America.
