Cape Reinga — Northland Lighthouse Run.
A pilgrimage to New Zealand's spiritual northernmost point — Te Rerenga Wairua (Leaping Place of Spirits) where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea visibly collide in swirling currents. SH1 runs the full length of the Aupouri Peninsula past Ninety Mile Beach to the remote headland. In Maori tradition the spirits of the dead begin their journey to Hawaiki from here. The lighthouse stands 301m above the churning sea at one of New Zealand's most dramatic and sacred viewpoints.

KaitaiaStart · Commercial hub of the Far North. Depart early — tour buses crowd the Cape road from 11am. Fill up here; next reliable fuel is 115km away. The Northland Museum gives useful cultural context before heading north.
Ninety Mile BeachScenic Point · 88km of golden sand fronting the Tasman Sea — the name is a historic misnomer. The road runs inland parallel to the beach through Aupouri farmland. In summer, guided 4WD convoys drive the hard-packed sand at low tide. The beach is a legal public road.
Cape Reinga LighthousePhoto Spot · New Zealand's spiritual northernmost point at 301m above sea. The Pacific and Tasman visibly collide in standing wave lines below. The gnarled pohutukawa tree at the cliff edge is sacred — spirits leap from its roots to Hawaiki. Arrive before 10am before the tour groups. Lighthouse dates to 1941.
