The Mackenzie Basin is New Zealand's most dramatic open landscape — tawny tussock plains between snow-capped ranges, and two of the country's most famous lakes (Tekapo and Pukaki, both glacially turquoise). Mount Cook (Aoraki, 3,724m) dominates the western skyline. The Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo is one of the most photographed buildings in NZ.

Lake TekapoStart · Start at Lake Tekapo. The Church of the Good Shepherd framing the turquoise lake is best at dawn. The Tekapo Springs observatory is an International Dark Sky Reserve.

Lake PukakiPhoto Spot · Turn off SH8 to the lake edge. The view of Aoraki/Mt Cook reflected in the turquoise lake is the classic Southern Alps image.

Mount Cook Road (SH80)Scenic Point · 55km along the lake and through the Hooker Valley to the mountain. The road ends at the village with Aoraki filling the frame.

Mount Cook VillageMountain Pass · The Hooker Valley track (3hrs return) walks to glacier viewpoints. Hermitage Hotel for coffee and the huge Mt Cook view.

Lindis PassScenic Point · Return via SH8 through the Lindis Pass. Soft rounded tussock hills, no guardrails, pure New Zealand pastoral.
