Motorcycle Routes in France

France is a motorcycle touring powerhouse with three distinct mountain ranges — the Alps, Pyrenees, and Vosges — plus thousands of kilometres of quiet departmental roads connecting charming villages, vineyards, and dramatic coastline. The Alpine roads around the Tour de France climbs (Galibier, Izoard, Alpe d'Huez) are among the most iconic in Europe.

The best season for mountain riding is May through October, while the Mediterranean coast and Provence are enjoyable nearly year-round. The Pyrenees offer a warmer alternative to the Alps with equally dramatic passes and significantly less traffic. The Vosges mountains in Alsace are a hidden gem — tight, technical roads through dense forest with almost no tourists.

French toll motorways (péages) are expensive for motorcycles but the free routes nationales and departementales are where the riding is anyway. Fuel stations in rural France may close for lunch (noon–2pm) and all day Sunday — fill up when you can. Speed cameras are frequent, and radar detectors are illegal.
