Why Europe Is the Ultimate Motorcycle Destination

Europe packs more riding diversity into a smaller area than anywhere else on earth. Within a single day, you can cross alpine passes above 2,500m, cruise Mediterranean coastlines, and navigate ancient city centers — all on well-maintained roads with fuel stops every 80-120km.

The 2026 season brings several improvements for motorcycle travelers: Austria has eliminated vignette requirements for motorcycles on most alpine routes, and several Swiss passes now offer dedicated motorcycle parking at summit viewpoints.

Top Routes by Country

Italy: The Dolomites Circuit

Italy's Dolomiti region remains the gold standard for motorcycle touring. The combination of smooth asphalt, dramatic elevation changes, and world-class food makes this unbeatable.

Key passes: Stelvio (2,757m), Passo dello Stelvio, Passo di Gavia, Passo del Tonale

Best months: June through September. Stelvio typically opens late May but snow walls remain into June.

Surface: Fully paved, excellent condition. Watch for gravel on shoulders after spring thaw.

Austria: Grossglockner High Alpine Road

At 48km, the Grossglockner is purpose-built for scenic driving. The toll road (EUR 29.50 for motorcycles in 2026) winds through 36 switchbacks with panoramic views of Austria's highest peak.

Best months: May through October (road closes for winter).

Pro tip: Arrive before 9am to beat tour bus traffic. The road is quietest on weekday mornings.

Norway: The Atlantic Road

Eight bridges spanning open ocean between islands. Norway's Atlantic Road (Atlanterhavsveien) is just 8.3km but delivers some of the most dramatic coastal riding anywhere. Combine it with the Trollstigen mountain road for a full-day epic.

Best months: June through August. Midnight sun means you can ride until 11pm.

Weather warning: Norwegian coast weather changes fast. Pack rain gear regardless of forecast.

France: Route Napoleon

Follow Napoleon's march from the Riviera to Grenoble through 325km of Provencal countryside. Lavender fields, medieval villages, and the dramatic Gorges du Verdon make this a touring classic.

Best months: April through October. July-August for lavender.

Spain: Picos de Europa

Northern Spain's mountain range offers Alpine-quality roads without Alpine-level traffic. The Desfiladero de los Beyos gorge road is a highlight — narrow, twisty, and breathtaking.

Best months: May through October. Northern Spain is cooler and wetter than the coast.

Switzerland: Four Passes Loop

Combine Furka, Grimsel, Susten, and Nufenen in a single day loop from Andermatt. 200km, four passes above 2,000m, and some of the best-maintained roads in Europe.

Best months: June through September.
