Motorcycle spark plugs are the smallest, cheapest part of your ignition system — and one of the most commonly ignored. A worn plug quietly robs you of power, fuel economy, and easy starts long before it fails outright. This guide covers how often to change motorcycle spark plugs, the warning signs of a bad plug, how to read a plug's color like a mechanic, and the difference between copper and iridium so you buy the right one.

The short answer: there is no universal mileage. As NGK puts it, "the best guide is the manufacturer's recommendation for your vehicle" — spark plug service varies by brand, model, and plug material. The ranges below are realistic planning figures, but your owner's manual always wins.

How often should you change motorcycle spark plugs?

Spark plugs wear because the center and ground electrodes slowly erode with every spark. As the gap between them widens, the ignition system needs more voltage to bridge it — until fuel starts going unburned. That is the point where power, economy, and emissions all suffer. Fitting fresh plugs with sharp new edges restores the ignition system's efficiency.

Replacement intervals depend mostly on the electrode material:

These ranges are cross-confirmed by both NGK and DENSO, the two largest OEM plug makers. But there is a motorcycle-specific catch: many bike manufacturers specify far shorter intervals than a car, because motorcycle engines rev much higher and run harder. Yamaha's schedule for the MT-07, for example, calls for inspecting and replacing plugs well before the mileage figures above — on the order of every ~12,000 km / ~8,000 mi. Time matters too. If your bike sits or you ride low miles, replace plugs every 2–3 years regardless of odometer reading — moisture, ethanol-blended fuel, and repeated heat cycling degrade them even when the bike is parked. Harley-Davidson, for instance, sets a two-year limit on many models whichever comes first.

Signs of a bad motorcycle spark plug

Worn or fouled plugs rarely fail all at once — they degrade, and the symptoms creep in. The most common signs are:

  • Hard starting. A weak spark struggles to light the mixture, so the engine cranks longer before it catches.
  • Misfiring or stumbling. The engine trips out of its normal rhythm, especially under load or hard acceleration.
  • Rough or uneven idle. The bike shakes or the rpm wanders while stopped.
  • Poor fuel economy. Incomplete combustion wastes fuel and your tank range drops.
  • Sluggish acceleration and hesitation. Throttle response goes flat and lazy.
  • Backfiring or popping in the exhaust from unburned fuel igniting late.

How to read a spark plug

Pulling a plug and reading its tip is one of the fastest free diagnostics you can do. Compare the ceramic insulator and the electrode against the guide below:

Take a photo of each plug as you remove it. Logging plug condition over time makes it obvious when one cylinder starts trending rich or lean — a pattern that is easy to miss from memory alone.

Copper vs iridium: which should you use?

The most important rule is to fit the plug specification and heat range your manufacturer lists — not to "upgrade" blindly. Heat range controls how quickly the plug sheds combustion heat; the wrong one causes fouling (too cold) or overheating and detonation (too hot).

Within the correct heat range, the material is your choice. Copper (nickel) plugs conduct heat and electricity extremely well and cost the least, but they wear the fastest — a sensible pick if your manual specifies them or on a tuned, high-output engine you service often. Iridium and platinum plugs use a fine, erosion-resistant tip that holds its gap far longer, which is exactly why factories fit them for long service intervals. Simple rule: if your bike came with iridium, replace it with iridium.

How to replace motorcycle spark plugs

The job is beginner-friendly on most bikes once you can physically reach the plugs — though some models require removing the tank or side fairings first. The essentials:

  1. Work on a cold engine. Removing plugs from a hot aluminum head risks stripping the threads.
  2. Do one plug at a time. That way you never mix up coils or plug leads between cylinders.
  3. Check the gap. Measure each new plug with a feeler gauge and set it to your manual's figure. Gaps are model-specific — the MT-07's NGK LMAR8A-9, for instance, runs roughly 0.8–0.9 mm (0.031–0.035 in) — so always use your spec, not a generic number.
  4. Start it by hand. Thread the plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's torque spec or the angle method printed on the box. Do not overtighten.
  5. Reconnect and repeat. Refit the coil or lead, then move to the next cylinder.
